From Fallen Giants to Functional Art: Our Journey with Salvaged Wood Cookies.

If you’ve been following us on social media, you’ve probably seen the stunning slices of wood we call “cookies” popping up more and more. These cross-sections of salvaged logs aren’t just beautiful—they tell a story of sustainability, legacy, and creative reuse. Each of our pieces come from what is referred to as urban wood; this is wood that wasn’t harvested for its timber value and came from urban trees, orchard retired trees, salvaged trees, and many places where we work, play, or live.

At Far West, we salvage logs from some pretty incredible places. We give a second life to urban trees that once lined city streets, stood in old orchards, or fell during storms. Instead of ending up as mulch, firewood, or in a landfill, these trees are turned into something meaningful. One of the most versatile and eye-catching forms they take is the cookie.

Right now, we’ve got some extraordinary cookies in the yard. Our claro walnut burl cookies come from retired orchard trees that would have otherwise been piled and burned. Instead, these trees are now offering up some of the most wildly figured, character-filled slices you can imagine. Each one is completely unique—swirls, eyes, rich chocolatey tones, and they are gluten free, dairy free, and low carb, ha! They make jaw-dropping urban wood coffee tables, wall art, or even one-of-a-kind charcuterie boards.

But the real show-stoppers? Our 9.5-foot-diameter old growth giant sequoia redwood wood cookies. These came from trees that fell naturally during a storm—not harvested, not cut down. These giants lived for thousands of years, and their rings hold centuries of history. You could actually use one as a living timeline, marking significant historical events along the growth rings. Or let them shine just as they are—as an awe-inspiring dining table or a focal point of your home or business.

Every cookie we make is part of our mission to honor the trees that grew in our communities. We’re not just salvaging wood—we’re salvaging stories, beauty, and potential. And we’re doing it one slice at a time. And don’t worry, all of our wood cookies and wood slabs are kiln dried to ensure they are bug free, dry, and ready to use.

Come visit the store and take a look, or check out our wood cookie inventory online. You never know which piece might speak to you.

“Every salvaged wood cookie we create is a slice of urban wood history—crafted for sustainable reuse and made to be functional art.”
