California Black Oak, also often referred to as Western Red Oak, used to be treated as a weed tree in California’s forests. And until the mid 1960’s to early 1970’s there was a major attempt to eradicate these trees from California’s forests to make more room for the more profitable commercial softwood species. Today the trees are going strong and are in good supply and more black oaks remain in California’s forests than ever before. When these trees need to be removed for highway construction, levee improvement projects, or thinning projects for forest health, Far West attempts to step in and salvage the logs from the chipper, landfill, or your fireplace.

California Black Oak has a light to medium warm reddish brown color that is easily workable and is commonly used for cabinetry, furniture, interior trim, flooring, and veneer among many other uses. California Black oak will have shorter ray flecks than the White Oak.
